Abstract

MARTINEZ AGUILAR, José Manuel. The secularization of the Franciscan convent of Tzintzuntzan. Resistance of a town. Tzintzun. Rev. estud. históricos [online]. 2016, n.64, pp.69-91. ISSN 2007-963X.

The death of the guardian Fray Miguel de Mesa, in January 1762, marked the beginning of the secularization of the parish and Franciscan doctrine of Tzintzuntzan, province of San Pedro and San Pablo of Michoacán. Since then, the friars of the province, the council and the local Indians begged the bishop and viceroy not to expel the Franciscans from the convent. In spite of their pleas and protests, they could not prevent that the most important monasteries of Michoacán underwent secularization by the end of 1766.

Keywords : secularization; Tzintzuntzan; Franciscan province of Michoacán; Bourbons.
