Abstract

GAVIRA MARQUEZ, María Concepción. The Soba valley (Cantabria): neighbors, councils and local government at the end of the 18th century. Tzintzun. Rev. estud. históricos [online]. 2016, n.64, pp.9-46. ISSN 2007-963X.

The present article seeks to reconstruct and explain municipal institutions in a mountain valley, namely the Soba Valley (Cantabria), located north of the Iberian Peninsula. We are interested in finding out who held the municipal posts and which were the strategies used by the most important families of the valley in order to consolidate their local power. The study focuses on one of the most influential families in Soba and the conflicts generated by the occupation and abuse of these posts. Last, we will analyze the political culture of a rural valley in the North of Spain in the 18th century from where an important group of migrants left the country in order to go to the American colonies.

Keywords : municipal administration; councils; councilors; Soba Valley.
