Abstract

AGUAYO TELLEZ, Ernesto  and  MANCHA TORRES, Gloria. Poor neighborhood conditions and youth inactivity in the Monterrey metropolitan área. EconoQuantum [online]. 2017, vol.14, n.2, pp.85-103. ISSN 2007-9869.  https://doi.org/10.18381/eq.v14i2.7102.

Using spatial econometric tools, this article explores, for the Metropolitan Area of Monterrey, Mexico, the existence of a relationship between the economic and social environment in which young people live (as measured by the Social Gap Index) and its activity condition: working, studying or neither. It is found that young people who live in neighborhoods with higher levels of social underdevelopment are particularly more likely to belong to the not-working and not-studying condition (neet). Furthermore, the use of spatial econometric tools enables us to conclude that the existence of neets in a neighborhood is geographically “contagious”, i.e., the existence of neets in a neighborhood contributes to the existence of neets in nearby neighborhoods.
