Abstract

ROSALES GONZALEZ, Margarita. Estrategias de intervención para el desarrollo local: Experiencias en comunidades mayas del sur de Yucatán. Península [online]. 2012, vol.7, n.1, pp.79-101. ISSN 1870-5766.

In the framework of development anthropology, a critical discussion of different intervention strategies is a priority and the results are of crucial importance to the field. In the southern region of the state of Yucatan, Mexico, a non-profit organization that aims to create conditions for endogenous and sustainable development has used different strategies in the promotion of educational, economic, environmental and cultural projects. Among these strategies we found the promotion and advising of economic organizations, the recuperation and strengthening of traditional Maya organizations, and the creation and accompaniment of local committees working on disaster risk reduction and community development. This presentation describes, analyzes and compares these strategies, as well as the benefits and limitations of these interventions in addressing sustainable development issues. In particular, it highlights how those organizations that continued their work after the external agents' advising role ended, are those that were based on the local culture's practices, rhythms, norms and meanings.

Keywords : intervention strategies; Maya communities; local development.
