Abstract

ROMAN-RUIZ, Sandra I.  and  HERNANDEZ-DAUMAS, Salvador. Food security in the municipality of Oxchuc, Chiapas. agric. soc. desarro [online]. 2010, vol.7, n.1, pp.71-79. ISSN 1870-5472.

This study had the objective of analyzing food security (sufficiency, access, security and time) from families' livelihoods in three micro-regions of the municipality of Oxchuc, Chiapas (Pashtonticjá, El Tzay and Oxchuc-center), with the approach of Sustainable Livelihoods (SL). The primary activity in the municipality is self-sustaining agriculture. Due to low yields, families complement their income through cultivation of commercial crops and the offering of services. The study was performed in two stages: first, the families' livelihoods were identified through a municipal diagnosis. Then, food security was analyzed, as well as families' strategies and vulnerabilities, through participatory techniques. The results show that families in the municipality have financial incomes lower than the poverty line suggested by FAO, which is why they invest a relevant part of their income in food. As consequence, they present food insecurity, and therefore families have modified their life strategies, resorting to migration and the search for subsidies in order to survive.
