Abstract

MELVILLE, José Antonio. Anthropological Entrails: Conducting an Autopsy on Rapport. Rev. pueblos front. digit. [online]. 2022, vol.17, e572.  Epub Mar 21, 2023. ISSN 1870-4115.  https://doi.org/10.22201/cimsur.18704115e.2022.v17.572.

Although the anthropological body is well known, its entrails are less known. This is made more visible when teaching the discipline. The organs that constitute an anthropological research regularly remain hidden from view since they might not be in agreement with what ought to be, which strives to serve as a guide to students. The horizon that is meant to be taught to future anthropologists is also embedded in the themes that they are taught. There is therefore an overrepresentation of the topics regarding marginalized communities in contrast to topics regarding elites. Through comparing Bronislaw Malinowski’s Argonauts of the Western Pacific and A Diary in the Strictest Sense of the Word, Malinowski questions the generation of rapport in anthropological practice based on his own doctoral research experience regarding elites and corruption in Guatemala.

Keywords : elites; field work; rapport; methodology; ethnography.
