Abstract

RODRIGUEZ CASTILLO, Luis. On Human Nature: A Commentary on The Western Illusion of Human Nature by Marshall Sahlins. Rev. pueblos front. digit. [online]. 2018, vol.13, e360. ISSN 1870-4115.  https://doi.org/10.22201/cimsur.18704115e.2018.25.360.

Marshall Sahlins’s core argument is that the Western culture, by restricting its understanding of humanity to the maximization of the individual, is actually showing a generalized contempt for itself. The author reviews the emergence of this idea within the field of political philosophy, counter-arguing that this leads to ignoring history and the diversity of an extensive variability of human behavior sustained on kinship relationships, about which there are ethnographic records. This research note provides a critical glance of both forms of fundamentalism.

Keywords : Western world; political philosophy; kinship; ethnography; equality.
