Abstract

LISBONA GUILLEN, Miguel  and  RODRIGUEZ BALAM, Enrique. Stereotypes about the Chinese in Mexico: From Caricatured Images to Internet Memes. Rev. pueblos front. digit. [online]. 2018, vol.13, e.2018.v13.3581. ISSN 1870-4115.  https://doi.org/10.22201/cimsur.18704115e.2018.v13.3581.

This article demonstrates the continuity of the negative stereotypes created to identify Chinese immigrants in two different moments of Mexican history, even though Mexico might not be the only receiving country. However, when this continuity is expressed visually, differences emerge. Recent and ongoing technological transformations allow us to question to what degree there is continuity in the perspectives of groups like these. At the same time, the changes that take place thanks to the tools provided by social networking on the Internet become evident.

Keywords : xenophobia; discrimination; immigration; caricature; meme.
