Abstract

MEZA MARROQUIN, Blanca Jazmin; PORTAL BOZA, Malena  and  FEITO MADRIGAL, Duniesky. Saving for Retirement in Mexico. A Generational and Gender Analysis. Región y sociedad [online]. 2023, vol.35, e1715.  Epub Sep 04, 2023. ISSN 2448-4849.  https://doi.org/10.22198/rys2023/35/1715.

Objective: to evaluate the behavior and projections regarding retirement savings from a generational and gender approach in Mexico. Methodology: contingency tables were applied with information from the 2018 National Survey of Financial Inclusion. Results: a high percentage of young people between the ages of 18 and 25 do not have a retirement account, mainly because they are not yet part of the labor market or because they are unaware of its processing. Regarding gender, women are the most affected, largely explained by greater deficiencies in their financial education and inequalities derived from their access to the labor market. Value: the study provides results that are a benchmark for the development of public policies. Limitations: the sample was taken in a single period of time (2018). Conclusions: most of the population does not have a retirement savings account and only a small percentage of it makes voluntary contributions. The perspective on future financing indicates that there is a tendency to receive support from children, partner, other relatives and government programs.
