Abstract

TAGLE ZAMORA, Daniel  and  CARRILLO GONZALEZ, Graciela. Solid Waste Management in León, Guanajuato: Sings of Circular Economy and the Sustainable Development Goals. Región y sociedad [online]. 2022, vol.34, e1583.  Epub Aug 01, 2022. ISSN 2448-4849.  https://doi.org/10.22198/rys2022/34/1583.

Objective: to define the current state of urban solid waste management in León, Guanajuato. The analysis unit is the Public Cleaning Integrated System. Methodology: it is a qualitative study. The information was obtained from in-depth interviews with waste management actors, complemented with public information and specialized articles. Results: the model for waste management in León is creating conditions for its recovery and the development of markets in a very initial sense of circular economy. The official data for the per capita generation of waste exhibit a reduction of 38% in 2020 compared to 2009, showing a path towards the objectives of sustainable development. Value: the management of urban solid waste in a municipality is analyzed from the perspective of circular economy. Limitations: the study did not consider in depth the contribution of the pickers. Conclusions: the operating agency’s priority is to keep healthy finances rather than focusing on a consistent circular economy project that could give support to the sustainable developing goals.

Keywords : urban solid waste; circular economy; sustainable developing goals; Public Cleaning Integrated System; León; Guanajuato.
