Abstract

GARCIA-SALAZAR, José Alberto; ALVAREZ-GONZALEZ, Xóchitl  and  MORA-FLORES, José Saturnino. Growth of the Agricultural Warehouses Capacity in Mexico, 1996-2019. Región y sociedad [online]. 2020, vol.32, e1258.  Epub Jan 27, 2021. ISSN 2448-4849.  https://doi.org/10.22198/rys2020/32/1258.

The objective is to analyze agricultural warehouses storage-installed capacity growth between 1966 and 2019 in all Mexican states in order to determine if it is sufficient for the optimum inventories program corn requires. The corn storage demand was calculated and compared with the storage-installed capacity through spatial and intertemporal equilibrium model formulation for the corn market. The results indicate that warehouse capacity is sufficient to store existing inventories in most Mexican states. In contrast, Chiapas, Guerrero and Oaxaca showed a deficit. One limitation of the study is the model’s regional coverage at the state level, since a municipality analysis would have been more complete. The main value of the study is that its results may conduct investment projects on warehouses. The main conclusion establishes that the Government must take the necessary measures to increase the storage capacity of warehouses in Southern México.

Keywords : corn; storage demand; warehouses-installed capacity; spatial and intertemporal equilibrium model.
