Abstract

CRUZ SANCHEZ, Marcelina et al. Sobrepeso y obesidad: una propuesta de abordaje desde la sociología. Región y sociedad [online]. 2013, vol.25, n.57, pp.165-202. ISSN 2448-4849.

Overweight and obesity are considered a serious public health problem because of their relationship to chronic diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular disease, which are increasing among poor people and particularly women. In order to counter and revert the problem, people are asked to modify their lifestyle, making the obesity epidemic an individual responsibility and denying the influence of social structure. We propose that the overweight and obesity epidemic exceeds a biomedical perspective, and is rather a problem of social and gender inequality. For this reason, we propose using a social perspective to understand the social roots of obesity, and argue that lifestyle is a collective rather than individual quality.

Keywords : overweight; obesity; social theory; gender; lifestyle.
