Abstract

CALVARIO PARRA, José Eduardo. Masculinidad, riesgos y padecimientos laborales: Jornaleros agrícolas del poblado Miguel Alemán, Sonora. Región y sociedad [online]. 2007, vol.19, n.40, pp.39-72. ISSN 2448-4849.

Men tend to omit or make light of health damages caused by work, since they are considered a natural part of the working lives of men. Consequently, masculine conduct is associated with ideas of greater strength and invulnerability to work-related risks and illnesses. This article explores life experiences related to the health-disease process and the social construction of dominant masculinity of farmworkers in the community of Miguel Alemán, Sonora. The main objective is to document the self-care practices of men in the region as well as health-care costs in a gendered context. After a brief theoretical review, examples are analyzed of job-related accidents and ailments (such as hydrogenated cyana-mide poisoning and hemorrhoids) and the consequences of the relationship between male identity and the perception of subjective immunity in the face of disease and danger. This article observes microsocial processes in light of empirical and methodological links between the work and home environments, eth-nographically describing actors' practices and discourse.

Keywords : gender; masculinity; experience of illness and subjective immunity.
