Abstract

TAYLOR HANSEN, Lawrence Douglas. La explotación de un recurso mineral en la frontera norte de México: La comercialización del ónix mármol de Baja California, 1890-1958. Región y sociedad [online]. 2004, vol.16, n.30, pp.117-157. ISSN 2448-4849.

Exploitation of onyx marble in a site known as "El Mármol" in Baja California since the discovering of this huge deposit in 1890 until 1958, when the quarry was closed, is analyzed in this study. Activities of New Pedrara Mexican Onyx Company, founded in 1892, and its successors, notably Southwest Onyx and Marble Company, established in 1921, are emphasized. Factors leading to the boom of this business during the first decades of the twentieth century, as well as the reasons of its decline and eventual disappearance at the end of the 1950’s are examined.

Keywords : mining; onyx; Porfiriato; Baja California; minerals; foreign investment in Mexico; history of the mining.
