In this article, the authors ask themselves to what degree inequality and poverty on a state level can explain the results of the U.S. presidential elections in 2012 and 2016, and what the state- level balance sheet in the U.S. presidential elections was? They also explore on an individual level what variables help us understand the vote for Republican presidential candidates in 2012 and 2016 by looking at the American National Election Studies Survey. To answer their questions, they carried out two analyses: one at a state level and the other, based on voters’ responses, to explain the contrasting results of 2012 and 2016.
