Abstract

CRUZ LERA, Estefanía. Women from the Establishment versus the “Squad”: Female Political Representational Styles In the U.S Congress. Norteamérica [online]. 2020, vol.15, n.1, pp.33-56.  Epub Jan 22, 2021. ISSN 2448-7228.  https://doi.org/10.22201/cisan.24487228e.2020.1.389.

In 2019, a record number of women were members of the U.S. Congress. In addition to their increased participation, these congresswomen are more ethnically, racially, culturally, and class diverse. Two highly contrasting profiles show up in this political universe: the Establishment women led by Nancy Pelosi and the rebellious “Squad,” headed by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. This article analyzes social networks, the press, and their legislative performance to contrast both styles of political representation. The author’s main finding is that the Squad and Establishment representatives do not differ in terms of presenting bills, voting, and funding sources; the main differences are found in their public discourse, their ideological platform, and their leadership styles.

Keywords : Congress; women; representation; legislative branch; United States.
