Abstract

We studied individual growth, condition factor and relative condition of the shrimp Tozeuma carolinense during dry and rainy season from three seagrass-covered locations at the southern region of Laguna Madre of Tamaulipas, Mexico. Biological material was obtained by sieving a superficial sample equivalent to 1.5 m2. Total length and weight for each individual were measured. The analyzed parameters to compare the population condition were examined by season, pooled data and sex, through the length-weight relationship (W = a*Lb), which was defined by the b slope value and tested for significance with a t-student test (p < 0.05). A total of 412 specimens were identified and arranged within 4 groups: pooled data (DA), males (M), non-ovigerous females (HNO) and ovigerous females (HOV), of which 307 were collected in the rainy season and 105 in the dry season. Most of the analyzed groups of T. carolinense specimens showed allometric growth at both seasons, except for DA during dry season and HNO in the rainy period, which presented isometry. The highest values of condition factor were for HOV (0.628). Relative condition ranged from 0.893 for M in the dry period to 1.26 for HOV during the rainy season.
