Abstract

ORELLANA, José I.  and  VALDIVIA, Carlos E.. The importance of austral thrush Turdus falcklandii in seed germination of pitra Myrceugenia planipes. Rev. Mex. Biodiv. [online]. 2017, vol.88, n.2, pp.474-476. ISSN 2007-8706.  https://doi.org/10.1016/j.rmb.2017.03.003.

In the temperate austral forests endozoochory is crucial for many plants with fleshy fruits, birds being the biggest consumers of fruits and seed dispersers. The Austral thrush Turdus falcklandii is a resident bird that consumes fruits of Myrceugeia planipes, increasing seed germination and reducing the time required for the appearance of the hypocotyl, which translates into competitive advantages for new individuals.

Keywords : Frugivory; Scarification; Hypocotyl; Legitimate disperser.
