Abstract

PONS DIEZ, Xavier. Interpretive models of drug consumption. Polis [online]. 2008, vol.4, n.2, pp.157-186. ISSN 2594-0686.

This article analyzes different interpretive models that try to understand and explain the drug consumption problem. Nine theoretical interpretations that approach this question's explanation are studied: juridical model, consumption distribution model, traditional medical model, harm reduction model, social deprivation model, socio-structural factors model, health education model, individual psychological model and socio-ecological model. In each case, their particular interpretive perspective is exposed, their most relevant contributions and a discussion on their limitations. The socio-ecological model is presented as a possible alternative to explain the drugs consumption problematic from the social sciences point of view and to intervene effectively on it, because of it integration vocation.

Keywords : drug addiction; drug consumption; epistemology models; social psychology of health; socio-ecological model.
