Abstract

NUNO LICONA, Alberto Enrique; FLORES HERNANDEZ, Nubia Azucena  and  CASTANEDA FRANCO, Luis Andrés. Exercise as supporting therapy in temporomandibular disorders. Rev. Odont. Mex [online]. 2008, vol.12, n.1, pp.29-33. ISSN 1870-199X.  https://doi.org/10.22201/fo.1870199xp.2008.12.1.15698.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders occur more frequently every day, and one of the main involved factors is the muscular contraction intensity . It is considered that exercise has a favourable effect in the treatment of TMJ disorders. The aim of the present study was to evaluate changes by means of the electromyography technique of the masseter muscles activity of patients with TMJ disorders after a three-week program exercise treatment. The results indicate that there was a significant decrease (P < 0.05, t-Student) of the muscular activity and clinical improvement. This results suggest favourable effects of exercise for treating patients with TMJ disorder and the EMG technique helps to evaluate.

Keywords : Mandibular exercise; electromyography; temporomandibular joint disorders.
