Abstract

ARGUELLES TELLO, Adriana; OROPEZA SOSA, Guillermo  and  GUERRERO IBARRA, Jorge. Radiographic characteristics of the skeletal open bite. Rev. Odont. Mex [online]. 2007, vol.11, n.1, pp.20-23. ISSN 1870-199X.  https://doi.org/10.22201/fo.1870199xp.2007.11.1.15882.

The purpose of this research, was to compare different open bite cephalometric indicators, since its concept and definition varies, and the evaluation criteria is different, as there isn´t a perfect cephalometric analysis, which makes its identification to have a variability according to the clinical concept. The material consisted in 40 lateral radiographs of patients that assisted to the Orthodontics Clinic at School of Dentistry at UNAM from 1997 to 2003. Twenty patients were diagnosed with skeletal open bite, and 20 with dental and skeletal Class I with normal cephalometric an dental measurements. When the comparisons between the open bite and the skeletal Class I groups were made, statistical significative differences were found in the measurements which can point to the areas that are posibly responsible in the skeletal open bite. The data obtained in this report indicate that there are actually big differences in open bite patients and specific measurements can be used for its identification.

Keywords : Open bite; cephalometric data; diagnosis.
