Abstract

FLORES, Silvana. United by music: transnational connections of rumberas films with Brazilian cinema. Culturales [online]. 2018, vol.6, e342. ISSN 2448-539X.  https://doi.org/10.22234/recu.20180601.e342.

We propose to approach to the transnational connection between Mexican and Brazilian cinemas in musicals produced by brothers Pedro, José Luis and Guillermo Calderón in the first country, through the rumberas films made by their enterprises Producciones Calderón and Cinematográfica Calderón. We will analyze the uses of musical numbers with rythms from Brazil as instruments for the generation of a tropical imaginary for purposes of expansion of Mexican cinema. Besides, we will study a particular case of co-production, that includes locations in the city of Rio de Janeiro: the film Aventura en Rio (Alberto Gout, 1953). We will also take into account the construction of a similar imaginary in some Brazilian movies from the genre of chanchadas, around the figure of the Mexican-Cuban rumbera.

Keywords : cinema; musical; rumberas; chanchadas; transnationalism.
