Abstract

SIMA LOZANO, Eyder Gabriel  and  BE RAMIREZ, Pedro Antonio. Attitudes toward Yucatec Maya among bilingual speakers in Cancun’s 90 th borough. Culturales [online]. 2017, vol.5, n.1, pp.217-253. ISSN 2448-539X.

This study attempts to identify the linguistic attitudes toward Yucatec Maya held by a group of bilingual (Maya/Spanish) Yucatecos residing in Cancun’s 90th borough (Región 90). These attitudes were examined using a sociolinguistic questionnaire exploring attitudes within families, schools and urban contexts. The results show that participants thought it is important to speak Yucatec Maya in those spaces. Despite the limitations inherent to the questionnaire as a research method, this paper is a contribution to understanding the situation of Yucatec Maya in the city of Cancun, where positive attitudes for the Mayan language seem to prevail.

Keywords : linguistic attitudes; Yucatec Maya; bilingual Yucatecans; 90th borough; Cancun.
