Abstract

NAVARRO SMITH, Alejandra; TAPIA LANDEROS, Alberto  and  GARDUNO, Everardo. Navegando a contracorriente: Los cucapás y la legislación ambiental. Culturales [online]. 2010, vol.6, n.12, pp.43-74. ISSN 2448-539X.

Since 1993, a series of legal conflicts have arisen between the Cocopah population and Mexican institutions. We suggest these conflicts should be reviewed at the light of historical transformations of the Cocopah fishing practice, and an understanding of their ancestral territory. Such transformations occur, as we suggest, while integrating Cocopah fishermen and fisherwomen into productive national dynamics without consulting them. Consultation is just one of the indigenous rights the Cocopah demand, based on the C. 169 Indigenous and Tribal Peoples Convention, 1989.

Keywords : Cocopah peoples; indigenous rights; corvina fishery; territory; law; environment.
