Abstract

GODINEZ RESENDIZ, Rogelio  and  ACEVES PASTRANA, Patricia. Birth of the Mexican pharmaceutical industry (1917-1940). Rev. mex. cienc. farm [online]. 2014, vol.45, n.2, pp.55-68. ISSN 1870-0195.

During the post-revolutionary period, the emergence of pharmaceutical industry in Mexico was a complex process affected by international and national factors. This paper analyzes the main features of early Mexican drug industry, by reviewing official documents and scientific publications of the time. It is evidenced that the indifference of first revolutionary governments towards the pharmaceutical industry, plus the lack of a long-term development plan for domestic companies, led to economic and technological dependence of the country on foreign drug companies.

Keywords : pharmaceutical industry; Mexican pharmacy; 20th century; industrial policies; industrial drug.
