Abstract

LOPEZ-NARANJO, Francisco et al. The quality of alcoholic beverages commercialized in Mexico and its potential health consequences. Rev. mex. cienc. farm [online]. 2013, vol.44, n.4, pp.62-72. ISSN 1870-0195.

Mexico is one of the Latin American countries with a high consumption of alcohol. Forty eight alcoholic drinks (BA) commercialized in Mexico were analyzed by established methods physical-chemical procedures for the determination of ethanol and methanol; the atomic absorption spectroscopy was used to determine the presence in traces quantities of Cu, Pb and Cd. All analyzed BA samples for methanol determination as well as for the detection of heavy toxic metals were within the limits of the official Mexican regulations for the corresponding procedures. The excessive consumption of BA increases the risk of death because, potentially, they can exacerbate the presence of chronic diseases and/or accident.

Keywords : alcoholic beverages; methanol; metal.
