Abstract

ASCACIO-VALDES, Juan Alberto; AGUILERA-CARBO, Antonio; RODRIGUEZ-HERRERA, Raúl  and  AGUILAR-GONZALEZ, Cristóbal. Determination of ellagic acid in native plants from the Mexican semi-desert. Rev. mex. cienc. farm [online]. 2013, vol.44, n.2, pp.36-40. ISSN 1870-0195.

This work has been developed to evaluate the Coahuila semi-desert plants potential such as gobernadora (Larrea tridentata Cov.), candelilla (Euphorbia antisyphilitica Zucc.), hojasen (Fluorensia cernua D.C.), pomegranate husk (Punica granatum L.) in different rippening stages and dragon's blood (Jatropha dioica Cerv.), using them as ellagic acid sources to use it in food and pharmaceutical industries. This study showed ellagitannins and ellagic acid presence in the plants before mentioned. Ellagic acid quantification was carried out by Wilson-Hagerman & Lei methods. The results showed that the pomegranate husk and candelilla were the best sources of ellagitannins. The studies about the ellagic acid extraction from semi-desert plants are scarce, by this reason, this work is relevant in the matter.

Keywords : semi-desert plants; ellagic acid; ellagitannins.
