The question of authority constitutes a political problem of the first order in the context of contemporary populisms, marked by power that authorizes itself through the discourse of “popular sovereignty”, represented by the figure of the leader. The first part of this article explores the origin of the concept of authority in terms of Arendt, a task that allows us to discuss the interpretation of this notion by modern political theory through the concept of sovereignty in the second part. Finally, following Pierre Rosanvallon, the anatomy of populism is described to reveal the practices whereby authority and power are hypostasized in the populist leader, updating the Hobbesian principle of sovereignty.
