Abstract

SOLIS DELGADILLO, Diego  and  CORTEZ SALINAS, Josafat. From democratic breakdowns to coalition governments: a review of the debate on presidentialism. Andamios [online]. 2019, vol.16, n.41, pp.283-307.  Epub May 20, 2020. ISSN 2594-1917.  https://doi.org/10.29092/uacm.v16i41.726.

This article reviews the studies on presidential systems generated after the seminal work of Juan Linz. We classify and order the literature highlighting the limitations posed by the new institutionalism. We identify three kind of studies: i) the ones centered on formal institutions, ii) spatial explanations and iii) studies based on informal institutions. We find a change in the independent variable in the studies of presidential systems: from the breakdown of democratic regimes to the instability of democratic governments.

Keywords : institutions; presidential system; democratic government; instability; informal rules.
