Abstract

This article describes and interprets the presence of the metaphor of the body in La República Original, by Jerónimo Merola (1587). Considering the historical constants in the metaphorical use of the body as a mechanism of legitimation of power, it analyzes the political meaning acquired for the topic in this author; also, how he use the work as a defense of the medical profession and certain prerogative of doctors to govern. The work highlights the classical sources of inspiration for the author and values the political opportunity of scientific discourse underlying the formulation.
