Abstract

ROMEU ALDAYA, Vivian. The Dispute for Symbolic Value in Contemporary Art: New Configuration in the Field of Art?. Andamios [online]. 2017, vol.14, n.34, pp.13-33. ISSN 2594-1917.

This paper aims to reflect upon the configuration and operation of the art’s field today. It does so from the role of the so-called contemporary art in the concerning field, although it is extremely diverse in its production and scope. The starting point for reflective analysis is Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of social fields from which is possible to recognize which elements give coherence to the art’s field and which others can be subverted through contemporary art nowadays. We arrive at the conclusion that a new configuration is perceived without altering the fundamental assumption of the art field: autonomy. Although the forms to preserve it seem quite different.

Keywords : Sociology of art; contemporary art; autonomy; Bourdieu; symbolic value.
