Abstract

BEDIN, Paula. The Crisis of Universalism: Redefinitions, Proposals and Debates. Andamios [online]. 2017, vol.14, n.33, pp.273-301. ISSN 2594-1917.

This paper attempts to give an account about the most relevant critical positions on classic universalism. For this purpose, we explain the meaning of universalism’s crisis and that of the abstract universal. We mention the topical redefinition of the concept of universal made by Badiou, Balibar and Žižek, who attempt to overcome the universal/particular dichotomy. We briefly explain the perspective of Spivak, Butler and Laclau who propose to think an anti-totalitarian universal. Finally we refer to the Butler’s interpretation about the universal with regard to social movements. In the conclusion we hold the necessity of keep thinking the universality by considering this concept as an indispensable dimension for any project that includes social transformation.

Keywords : Universal; particular; antitotalitarian universal; social movements; social transformation.
