The paper analyzes the regional development of the car industry in Mexico and estimates the factors that contribute to the integration of that manufacturing activity with the industrial sector of the usa. The methodology consists of a cointegration analysis of the two series in the long run and the estimation of the characteristics of the cyclical component. Finally, the nature of the crisis within the us auto industry is explained and the future perspectives of the Mexican car industry are analyzed as a function of the us automotive industry.
