Abstract

SAMANIEGO, Norma. Crisis, employment and wages in Mexico. Economía UNAM [online]. 2009, vol.6, n.16, pp.57-67. ISSN 1665-952X.

The world is living a deep global economic crisis whose expressions have been unfolding in slow motion, amplifying their dimension and deepening its effects into situations that a few months ago were unimaginable. The first reactions, that underestimated the evidence, were exceeded by a process of accelerated employment deterioration that also embraced a fall in population income, which has not yet touched bottom. The author analyzes the reasons for which the present impact on employment could be more severe than in previous crises and proposes urgent actions to meet this difficult juncture. Also, she raises the necessity for a deep reflection, framed in a vision of the country's future. She challenges to think what will replace the present petroleum income and jobs in traditional assembly industries, based on cheap manual labor, and to rethink the employment of the future in Mexico.
