BOBADILLA-ENCINAS, Gerardo Francisco. An Underground Controversy in Mexican Literature between 1870 and 1871. La Quinta Modelo and La Navidad en las montañas. Revista Col. San Luis [online]. 2021, vol.11, n.22, 00023. Epub 16-Fev-2024. ISSN 2007-8846. https://doi.org/10.21696/rcsl112220211330.
The objective of this paper is to describe and understand the relationship between the second edition of La Quinta Modelo (1870; first in book), by José María Roa Bárcena, and the original edition of La navidad en las montanas (1871), by Ignacio Manuel Altamirano, as an underground controversy, raised and resolved in the ethical-aesthetic sphere, not in the intellectual one. The joint analysis of the texts allows us to notice that the thematic, compositional and stylistic choice made by the Tixtlense writer in his work, replicates that of the Veracruz writer, as an artistic resolution that seeks to establish both an order of the world (the liberal) and a interpretation about him. The meaning of this study lies in the fact that it seeks to contribute in this way to the revision and rethinking of the history of literary culture during the restored Republic (1867-1876), understood until now as a space-time of reconciliation and national integration, leaving aside the recognition of the tensions that forged liberal Mexico.
