Abstract

MARTINEZ MELGAREJO, Milton Jesús. The economy of San Luis Potosí in the last two decades. Some empirical references on the 1990-2010 period. Revista Col. San Luis [online]. 2018, vol.8, n.16, pp.311-336.  Epub Aug 14, 2020. ISSN 2007-8846.  https://doi.org/10.21696/rcsl9162018779.

The objective of the research is to analyze the evolution of the economy of the State of San Luis Potosí from 1990 to 2010. It is hypothesized that the intense process of economic integration of the State, through attracting direct foreign investment from manufacturing companies, has intensified regional inequality in terms of gross domestic product and welfare levels. For the above, the evolution of the economy of the State of San Luis Potosí will be described and analyzed in the context of the permanent changes of the Mexican economy in the last half of the 20th century, and the main economic, demographic and well-being indicators from 1993 to 2010 will be reviewed. The highly contrasting results in the levels of development and competitiveness in the regions of the State of San Luis Potosí raise the reflection on the relevance of modifying the current regional development strategy. The conclusions of the article are based on the descriptive economy approach, where economic phenomena of inequality and social imbalance are observed. However, from the perspective of regulatory economics, some reflections are proposed that go through economic policy to modify regional development strategies.
