Abstract

DUPONT, Pier-Luc. Rurality and Local Integration Policies: Comparative Study of the Provinces of Alicante and Valencia. Migr. Inter [online]. 2013, vol.7, n.2, pp.215-244. ISSN 2594-0279.

Despite the settlement of a significant, growing number of international migrants in rural municipalities in high income countries, few studies have been conducted on the policies implemented by their local authorities in the area of cultural diversity. This article seeks to fill the gap by exploring certain theoretical and empirical reasons for believing that rural municipalities might differ from urban ones with respect to their propensity to accommodate immigrants' cultural practices as well as their main areas of intervention. A comparative analysis of 12 municipalities located in the Spanish provinces of Alicante and Valencia suggests that rural integration policies tend to be less pluralistic and more focused on socioeconomic issues than urban policies.

Keywords : rural immigration; integration; local policy; cultural diversity; Spain.
