Abstract

GOMEZ, Pablo Sebastián  and  BOLOGNA, Eduardo. Remittances and Labor Participation in Paraguay: Effect of South-South Displacements. Migr. Inter [online]. 2013, vol.7, n.2, pp.185-214. ISSN 2594-0279.

This article analyzes the labor force participation of household members receiving remittances in Paraguay. It involves a specific study of the effects of remittances from the South on a South country, using a propensity score approach to solve selection bias problems. The results highlight the structural differences between households that receive remittances from the South and those that do not. It is suggested that within a context of a high degree of informality and precariousness, remittances, mainly from Argentina, are sent to households in the lowest socioeconomic strata, which affects labor force participation, tending to reduce it.

Keywords : South-South migration; remittances; labor force participation; propensity score; Paraguay.
