Abstract

PAREDES OROZCO, Guillermo. Migración de guatemaltecos a México y Estados Unidos a partir de la Encuesta sobre migración en la frontera Guatemala-México 2004: Un análisis de estrategias migratorias. Migr. Inter [online]. 2009, vol.5, n.1, pp.93-124. ISSN 2594-0279.

Guatemalan migration to Mexico and the United States has entered the public debate in recent years. Only a short time ago, data sources on the topic were scarce, making it impossible to undertake a rigorous study of the phenomenon. Using data from the Encuesta sobre migración en la frontera Guatemala-México 2004 (2004 Guatemalan-Mexican Border Migration Survey), a logistical analysis determined the differences between two groups of Guatemalan migrants, one returning from Mexico and the other from United States. The analysis identified a complex of demographic, social, and labor characteristics that clearly distinguishes each migratory flow. This served to: 1) prove the presence of various factors in the migratory expulsion and organization of the international flows of Guatemalans; and 2) identify the components of both flows, each requiring a distinct type of assistance.

Keywords : Work; documentation; social networks; demographic profile; Guatemala.
