Abstract

VAUTRAVERS TOSCA, Guadalupe  and  OCHOA RIVERA, Aurora Marianela. Las recientes transformaciones de la migración en Tabasco. Migr. Inter [online]. 2009, vol.5, n.1, pp.65-91. ISSN 2594-0279.

This article describes recent changes to the migratory pattern in the state of Tabasco, Mexico, especially among people from the border municipality of Balancan who emigrate to the United States. We identify several factors that explain why Balancan is now contributing to the migratory flow: settling in the area are ejidatarios (communal farmers) from Michoacan, who have had migratory backgrounds or have family residing in the United States; the formation of a migrant social network in Oklahoma, started in the 1970s by a Balancán resident who had emigrated to the United States; and finally, the economic crisis in the municipality in recent years.

Keywords : Rural migration; migrant networks; new migration; expulsion factors; Tabasco.
