Abstract
MANCILLAS BAZAN, Celia and RODRIGUEZ RODRIGUEZ, Daniel. Muy cerca pero a la distancia: Transiciones familiares en una comunidad poblana de migrantes. Migr. Inter [online]. 2009, vol.5, n.1, pp.35-64. ISSN 2594-0279.
This article explains and analyzes familial change and continuity in an indigenous community in Puebla that has experienced high rates of international migration, primarily to New York. Through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and school surveys, we obtained data that let us consider diverse cultural patterns, and the characteristics of the involved actors, which seem to strengthen a family system that exists on both sides of the border. The focus of this study is to understand how some of the processes, which we call "transitional," occur in the formation and organization of domestic groups whose members migrate to the United States. Thus, by analyzing the adaptations made by the residents in this Puebla community, we seek to explain how they continue to strengthen signifi cant ties with other people from Puebla who reside in New York, and how they have managed to do so given the different environments, including language, laws, and customs, to mention only a few aspects.
