Abstract

TAYLOR HANSEN, Lawrence Douglas. Las migraciones menonitas al norte de México entre 1922 y 1940. Migr. Inter [online]. 2005, vol.3, n.1, pp.05-31. ISSN 2594-0279.

The article analyzes the factors that led to Mennonite migrations to Mexico from 1921, when the government of Alvaro Obregón granted the group a privilegium, to the administration of Lázaro Cárdenas. It focuses on this ethnic-religious group's history, since its Start during the Protestant Reformation in Europe until its arrival in Mexico. The article considers the Obregón government's motivations for granting Mennonites the right to settle in Mexico and the privilegium, which the group considered essentialfor its purposes, and it also examines the attitudes of the government and people of Chihuahua regarding this. It concludes with a discussion of the federal government's efforts under Presidents Plutarco Elias Calles and Cárdenas to revoke the privilegium, and the outcome of those efforts.
