Abstract

GIL ARAUJO, Sandra. Fútbol y migraciones: La Sentencia Bosman en el proceso de construcción de la Europa comunitaria (crónicas desde España). Migr. Inter [online]. 2002, vol.1, n.3, pp.54-78. ISSN 2594-0279.

This work analyzes the social discourses that arose in the Spanish soccer community following the European Court ofJustice's 1995 Bosman Ruling. This judgment applied to the realm of sports a European Union rule on the free movement of people, services, and capital. An effect of the Bosman case was the appearance of two categories of soccer players: community members and non-community members. The players with community-member status are no longer classified as foreigners in EU member states. The Bosman Ruling is an example of how a legislative decree regulating certain activities in the framework of the European Union's international treaties invades the political arena, causing confrontations over the presence of certain types of foreign workers (soccer players) and the threat that they may pose for the configuration of local identities.

Keywords : international migration; Bosman Ruling; soccer; Spain; European Union.
