Abstract

SUAREZ POMAR, Magdalena. Translation, Mestizaje and Transculturation in Three Texts by José María Arguedas. Latinoamérica [online]. 2022, n.74, pp.161-181.  Epub May 09, 2022. ISSN 2448-6914.  https://doi.org/10.22201/cialc.24486914e.2022.74.57374.

Abstract:

Starting from the concepts of “transculturación” and “mestizaje” I will analyze three texts by the peruvian author José María Arguedas: the speech he gave when he received the award “Inca Garcilaso de la Vega” (1968), the “Ensayo sobre la capacidad de creación artística del pueblo indio y mestizo” (1938) and, finally, the prologue to Dioses y hombres de Huarochirí (1966). My objective is to reflect on the Arguedian proposal of a committed translation in the translations from Quechua to Spanish that he carried out and how this proposal dialogues with the definitions of Ángel Rama. Finally, I consider that Arguedas was aware of the need to show in his translation exercise the overlap and mutual influence between two traditions (Andean and Western). I believe that this research shows the linguistic awareness either from the narrative or from the translation carried out by José María Arguedas. This work, far from being harmonious, involves losses, transformations and resistance; it is a cross-cultural work.

Keywords : Ángel Rama; José María Arguedas; Transculturation; Mestizaje; Translation.
