Abstract

WOOD PUJOLS, Yolanda. Antillean Indigenisms and Visual Image: Mexico, a Reference?. Latinoamérica [online]. 2019, n.68, pp.91-120. ISSN 2448-6914.  https://doi.org/10.22201/cialc.24486914e.2019.68.57092.

In the process of founding an image in the Greater Antilles during the first decades of the twentieth century, there was a focus the primitive and autochthonous as a way of recovering “one’s own” when the territories lived in historical circumstances of political instability and foreign occupation. The text studies the characteristics of Antillean indigenisms in the construction of a national identity and in the configuration of cultural imaginaries. Their relations with Mexican indigenismo are investigated as a reference and diverse visual tendencies are valued through authors and works in the territories that make up the sample. The study is carried out with an interdisciplinary and comparative perspective from visual studies, and the use of sources that problematize the meanings of Antillean indigenisms in their contexts.

Keywords : Indigenism; Antilles; Identity; Imaginaries.
