The article reflects on the legal establishment of the remaining quilombo communities, the implementation of public policies and the consequences of such measures for groups in demand of recognition of their quilombola identities by the Brazilian state. The investigation focuses on historical understanding of the quilombola organization, the discussion about affirmative policies directed to quilombolas and the functioning of the proposed culture and territory as ethnic-communicational devices.
