In 1561 Lope de Aguirre led the last major rebellion against the Spanish Crown in the Viceroyalty of Peru. A good part of the historical works on the subject have described Aguirre as a lunatic or a traitor; however, this paper proposes to study Aguirre and his revolt under the light of the political culture of his time, and in terms of the pact of vassalage.
