GOMEZ ZARATE, Patricia  and  SANTACRUZ DE LEON, Germán. The Embera-Katío Social Movement as Resistance to Hydropower Projects in Colombia. LiminaR [online]. 2023, vol.21, n.1, e984.  Epub Sep 14, 2023. ISSN 2007-8900.  https://doi.org/10.29043/liminar.v21i1.984.

This article exposes and analyzes the construction of the Embera-Katío social movement, based on the effects caused by the Urrá hydroelectric project in Colombia and the defense of the territory, under the argument that this movement marked the way and the forms of defense. against hydropower projects in Colombia. In methodological terms, the article draws on two moments of ethnographic fieldwork, one in 2007, which focused on the beginnings and the first 10 years of operation of the political organization, and the second in 2018, which focused on the trajectories of embera-katío leaders. The article contains four sections: the first deals with the theory and concepts of social movements, the second gives an account of the beginnings of the Embera-Katío movement, and the third explains the organization’s strategies against the construction of the hydroelectric plant and the fourth presents the discussion about the similarities of other anti-dam movements in later times.

Keywords : Social movement; indigenous struggle; hydropower; political organization; legal actions.
