Abstract

GOMEZ VAZQUEZ, Ulises Antonio. “So foul and obscene that even the Devil himself… flees from them”. Control and Sodomy in the Province of Chiapa, XVII-XVIII centuries. LiminaR [online]. 2023, vol.21, n.1, e975.  Epub Jan 20, 2023. ISSN 2007-8900.  https://doi.org/10.29043/liminar.v21i1.975.

Along with the conquest and colonization, the diverse sexual practices of the Mesoamerican people were reduced to the epitome of sin. Under the prohibition, they established punishments against sexual dissidences that didn´t align to the Christian moral. Founded in these first notes, the text submitted is an approximation to the history of sodomy, regarding control, relationships and representations established during this period. This are described and analyzed on the basis of chronicles and colonial sources that we have located in some of the archives of México, Chiapas and Guatemala, with the main purpose of extending the observations regarding the intrusion of the civil and religious authorities in the sexual affairs.

Keywords : Sodomy; Control; Sexuality; Colonial Period.
