FREYERMUTH-ENCISO, María Graciela. Maternal Mortality and Problems with the Health Care Provision in Chiapas: An Analysis from the Intercultural Perspective. LiminaR [online]. 2014, vol.12, n.2, pp.30-45. ISSN 2007-8900.
This work aims to investigate the role of multicultural factors affecting the health care services in Los Altos de Chiapas (Mexico). This region is characterized by having one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the country, where the population of fifteen municipalities is conformed by more than 95% of tsotsil and tseltal indigenous population and 54% only speak its native language. Therefore, most of them still employ its local health care system. We focused on the familiar and community dynamic, influenced by different factors such as gender, ethnicity, and age, that allows (or difficult) the women access to the obstetric emergency care in this region.
